Matthew Chapter Ten - Part One



I'm making this week's study time shorter than previous weeks.  I have cut chapter ten in half to give a little breathing room and allow you to catch up if you have fallen behind.  Therefore, this week and next will be shorter weeks.
Matthew Chapter Ten

Who did Jesus call to Himself? Vs1   
For what purpose did He gather them?     

What are the names of those that Jesus gathered to Himself? Vs2-4

Who did Jesus send them out to? Vs 5-6   
Who were they to stay away from?   
Why do you think they were to go to that certain group and stay away from the others?

What were they sent to say? Vs7   

What were they to do? vs8   

Look at the events of this chapter so far.  How specific was Jesus about who He gave His authority to?   

How specific was He about who they were to evangelize and minister to?   

Do you think that everyone gets the ability to heal and drive out demons today? back up or explain your answer.

What did Jesus tell them not to take with them? Vs9-10   

What do you think the statement “the worker is worth his keep” means?   

Where will they stay? Vs11  

What do they do when they enter a home? Vs12   

After they evaluate the home, what are they to do? vs13   

If anyone doesn’t welcome them or listen to their words (ministry – gospel), what should they do? vs14   

How will that place be treated on the day of judgement? Vs15   

What will the disciples be like out in the world? Vs16   

Think about that, what kind of complications or implications would this mean?   

What will they need to be like in this environment? Vs16   
What does this mean?   

Jesus tells them to be on guard.  What is going to happen to them? Vs17  

But what will they be when brought before Governors and Kings? Vs18   

Why shouldn’t they worry about this ahead of time? Vs19   

Who will be speaking through them? Vs20   

When we look at the disciples as sheep among wolves; who are the “wolves” in this verse? Vs21   
What will those “wolves” do?   

Why will the disciples be hated? Vs22   
What happens to the one who stands firm to the end?   

Does this contradict Ephesians 2:8-9?       Explain your answer:

Matthew Chapter Nine



Matthew Chapter Nine

Jesus healed a demon possessed man and then the people of that region pleaded with Him to leave.  What did He do? vs1   

What happened when He got there? Vs2   
 (Luke 5:17)
What did Jesus see in the men?   
What did He say to the paralyzed man?   

What is the first thing that the teachers of the law that were there, think to themselves? Vs3   

What did Jesus know? Vs4   

What did He say to them?   

What did He ask? Vs5   

Jesus said He wanted them to know something; what does the Son of Man have authority to do on earth? Vs6   
What did He tell the paralyzed man to do next?   

What did the paralyzed man do? vs7   

What did this do to the crowd? Vs8  
Why did the crowd praise God?   

Why do you think that Jesus started the paralyzed man’s healing with forgiveness of sins?   


Who did Jesus come across as he went on from there? Vs9   
What was this person doing?   
What did Jesus say to him?   
What did the person do?   

Were you surprised by this information?  Mathew has been relaying this information up to this point as an outsider, an observer.  Now he can give this information as an insider, as a disciple.  It was well into Jesus ministry before Matthew joined the ministry.

Where did Jesus end up? Vs10   
Who came to eat with Jesus and His disciples?   

Who asked the disciples about this when they saw what was happening? Vs11   

When Jesus heard the question, what explanation did He give? Vs12   

What did He tell the Pharisees to do? vs13   

Let’s explore this statement a little more.  See Hosea 6:6, 1Samuel 15:22 & Isaiah 1:17-18.
What does God desire more than rituals and traditions?   

Do you feel that you understand what it means that God desires mercy over sacrifice?  Explain it:   


Who came and asked Jesus a question? Vs14   
What is the question?   

What did Jesus compare Himself to? Vs15   
What is His explanation?   

What did Jesus use for an example next? Vs16-17 

Why?  Because the new doesn’t work with the old.  An old wineskin would burst if you put new wine in it that hadn’t yet fermented.  Because as it fermented it would expand and pull the wineskin seams apart.
Old ways of doing things don’t go with the New Covenant.  They exist next to each other but they aren’t used together.  Jesus brought something new.  He didn’t come to pour His life into the old way, He came with a new way. 

As Jesus was giving the explanation, who came to Him? Vs18   
What did he ask?   

Think about this...who were the ones that really disagreed with what Jesus was doing and teaching?  

What did Jesus do? vs19  
Who went with Him?   

What happened on His way to see the dead girl? Vs20   

What did she say to herself? Vs21   

Jesus turned to look at her, what did He say to her? vs22   
What happened to her immediately?   

Read this event in Luke 8:41-48.  What additional information do you find in Luke?   



Have you ever felt the power of the Holy Spirit go out from you?  Or into you?


Have you ever given testimony about how Jesus has healed you?   


What if people just reached out like this woman did, and received healing.  But many don’t, instead they keep their hard exterior or they try everything else, except reaching out to the One who can help.  (I am talking about spiritually.  How many people try every other kind of religion except simply coming to Jesus)

Jesus got to the leaders house and who was inside? Vs23    

What did Jesus tell these people? Vs24   
What did the people do when they were told this?  

They put the crowd outside and then what did Jesus do? vs25   
What happened to the girl?   

Why do you think that Jesus told the mourners that she was sleeping instead of telling them that He was going to bring her back to life?   

The crowd of mourners must have heard what had taken place because what happened throughout the region? Vs26   

Jesus moved on.  Who followed Him? vs27   
What were they calling out?   

He went indoors and these people approached Him.  What did Jesus ask them?   
How did they answer?   

What did Jesus do and say next? Vs29   

What happened to them? Vs30   
What stern warning did Jesus give?   

Again, why do you think Jesus said this?  He had just brought a girl back to life and had been performing miracles to the event that crowds were coming to Him.  So why wouldn’t He want the blind men telling others? 


Did they do what Jesus instructed? Vs31   

As they went out the door, who was brought to Jesus next? Vs32   

What happened to this man? Vs33   
How did the on-looking crowd react?   

What were the Pharisees thought on this? Vs34   

What does verse 35 tell us?   

When He saw the crowds coming to Him, why did He have compassion? Vs36   

Then what did He tell His disciples? Vs37

Matthew Chapter Eight

Here we are on chapter eight; we are in the thick of things now.  Jesus is heavy into His teaching and miracles.  The Gospel of John tells us that "Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.  But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."  John 20:30-31
Therefore the ones that have been recorded we need to really look at and take notice of.

Matthew Chapter Eight

When Jesus came down from the mountainside, after His teaching, who followed? Vs1   
Who came up to Jesus and what did he say? Vs2   
Look at the way the man asked Jesus for help.  Did he question if Jesus was able to help Him?  explain:   

What did Jesus say & do to the man? Vs3   

And then what instructions did He give the man? Vs4   


Read Leviticus 13:45-46.  How was a leper to live?   


When Jesus entered Capernaum, who came to Him? vs5   

What did he go to Jesus for? Vs6

What was the officer’s reply? Vs8    

How did the officer know this to be true? Vs9   

How did Jesus feel about the man’s response and say about his faith? Vs10

Gad was one of the tribes that stayed East of the Jordan when Joshua took the people into the promised land.  Since then, it had been infiltrated and intermingled with Gentiles (against the Lord’s instructions to the Israelites).  I would guess that is the region of the Gadarenes that is mentioned here.
Who came toward Jesus and met Him at the shore? Vs28  
Where were they coming from?   
What were they noted for, which caused people to not use that road?   

What did they say (shout at) to Jesus? Vs29   

What do their 2 questions reveal about what they knew?

Do you think that Jesus’ boat landed there by chance?

Jesus hadn’t said a word to them yet, what did He finally say? Vs32   
(Mark 5:12-13 and Luke 8:32  give a good understanding of how the demons waited for Jesus permission.)
What happened when the demons left the man? Vs32  

If we have Jesus living within us, do we need to be afraid of the demon possessed?   

Those poor people who were in charge of caring for the pigs got a shock.  What did they do after watching what happened? Vs33   
Read Mark 5:18-20 and Luke 8:38-39. 
What happened to the ex-demon possessed man?  
How do Jesus instructions for this man differ from what Jesus told the Jewish leper? 


What happened after this story spread by the pig’s care-takers? Vs34   
What did they plead for Jesus to do? 
  

What??  He just performed a miracle and gave people that path back to use, why do you think this was the response? 


In today’s cultural climate, would  this be the response to this type of miracle?   

This chapter was full of miracles and a variety of responses to those miracles.  Go back through the chapter and write the miracles below, and any responses to the miracles.
