Chapter Three
Who is introduced? Vs1
What was he doing?
Where?
What was he preaching? Vs2
What is repentance?
Who had foretold this man’s ministry

Who is John?
Luke 1:8-20 summary
Zechariah: He was a high priest. His turn came up for temple duty and while he
was inside burning incense an angel visited him. The angel told him that he and Elizabeth
would have a son. He questioned the
angel because he and his wife were both old.
The angel told him it would happen and that he was to name the child
John and then silenced Zechariah until the child was born and he named him
John. The high priest had the privilege
of giving a teaching after serving inside the temple but Zechariah didn’t have
his chance to give the teaching because he couldn’t speak.
What is John’s appearance like? Vs4
What does Luke 1:15-16 tell us about
John?
Read Numbers 6:2-5.
How
does this relate to John the Baptist?
Read Mark 1:1-5 and Luke 3:1-6.
Prophecy was that there would be a
fore runner to the Messiah, “one calling in the wilderness.”
Read John 1:19-23.
John’s mission was given to his father
in the temple by the angel.
Who does John claim to be?
People went out to the wilderness to
hear him. Where did the people come
from? Vs5
What did the people do before they
were baptized?
.
Who did John see approaching his
baptism site? Vs7
What did John preach to the people?
What did John charge them to do?

What did John say will not matter and
why? Vs9
What trees will be cut down and thrown
into the fire? Vs10
See what Luke says about John in Luke
3:7-9.
What did John tell the people about
the baptism that he performs? Vs11
Who will come after him?
What will this one do?
What will He have in His hand?
Vs12
What will He do with it?
What will happen to the chaff?
So if this symbolizes Jesus separating
the wheat (His people) from the chaff (those who don’t put their faith in Him),
what would unquenchable fire be?
(See Revelation 20:10 & 20:14-15)
Who came to hear John from Galilee?
Vs13
For what purpose?
What was John’s reaction to his
visitor? Vs14
What did Jesus say about that?
Vs15
What do you think this means?
Jesus was baptized by John, He came
out of the water, and what happened at that moment? Vs16
What was heard? Vs17
Why now? Why do you think the Spirit
would come and rest on Jesus at this point?
Read Isaiah 11:2-3 & 42:1.
What did God make Jesus to be?
How is this scripture fulfilled in the
events of Matthew 3:16-17?
