Wow, we have made it to Chapter Four already in this verse by verse study of the Bible. It's not so hard to see what this book says after all, is it?
Let's keep going; ask God for His understanding, then begin chapter four below:
Matthew
Chapter Four
Jesus
was baptized by John to fulfill all righteousness. The Holy Spirit came down and rested on Him
and then God announced Him as His son, whom He was well pleased with. What
happened to Jesus next? Vs1
Read
Mark 1:12. How quickly did this happen
after His baptism?
Why
was Jesus hungry? Vs2
What
happened to Him in the wilderness? Vs3
If
this happened to Jesus when He was hungry (or in a weak state), when do you
think this might happen to you?
Did
Jesus prove Himself to Satan? Vs4
What
did He say?
Where
did the devil take Jesus? Vs5
What
did he tell Jesus to do? vs6
What
would this prove?
What
did Satan use this time (in the wrong context) to manipulate Jesus?
Did
Jesus prove Himself to Satan? Vs7
What
did Jesus do?
If
Satan would dare try and manipulate Jesus, would he have any hesitation about
doing the same to you?
What
happened next? Vs8
What
did Satan offer Jesus and at what price? Vs9
Did
Jesus accept and how did He respond? Vs10
How
did Satan take Jesus final response? Vs11
Then
who came to Jesus and why?
When
we see the tactics that Satan used with Jesus and how Jesus responded, how
important do you think it is for us to know scripture properly?
Have
you ever been manipulated by the wrong or twisted use of scripture?
Let’s
re-cap: what are 3 ways Satan uses to
tempt?
1.
Our need – when we are in need or hurting we
are more vulnerable.
2.
Insecurity
- The need to prove ourselves & testing God. When we get focused on testing God or making
Him perform like a genie, we get discouraged.
It may start with proving to ourselves that we really are Christians or
really would do anything for God.
3.
Pride
& Power – the thought of being important, famous, powerful or rich. (The
American sin and temptation – Reality shows are proof enough of this)
Satan was once an angel, full of
splendor, Read the verses below, and write what led to his fall.
Ezekiel 28:11-17
The word of the Lord
came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king
of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and
perfect in beauty.13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian,
chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl.
Your settings and mountings were made
of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.
14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God;
you walked among the fiery stones.15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created
till wickedness was found in you.16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence,
and you sinned.
14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God;
you walked among the fiery stones.15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created
till wickedness was found in you.16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence,
and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the
mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from
among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud
on account of your beauty, and you
corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor.
What led to his fall?
Matthew
chapter 4.
What
did Jesus hear? Vs12
What
did He do?
In
verse 3:13, Jesus came from Galilee to the wilderness where John was. Then in 4:12 He left and went back to
Galilee. All 4 gospels tell that Jesus
went back to Galilee. (Matthew 4:12,
Mark 1:14, Luke 4:14, John 1:43).
Instead
of staying in Nazareth, where in Galilee did Jesus go? Vs13
Why?
Vs14
What was said about this land? Vs15-16
Read
Isaiah 9:1-7 for context of what this prophecy really meant and write your
thoughts:
What
did Jesus do from that time on? Vs17
What
does repent mean?
What
does this mark the beginning of?
Who
did Jesus see as He walked beside the Sea of Galilee? Vs18
What
were they doing?
What
invitation did Jesus give them? Vs19
What
did they do? vs20
Why
did these men follow Jesus so easily?
Read John 1:40-42.
Who
seemed to be the most excited about Jesus?
What
did Jesus say to Simon when He looked at him?
Why
do you think Jesus said this?
Back
to Matthew Chapter 4.
Who
did Jesus call to next? Vs21
What
were they doing?
What
did they do at the call of Jesus? Vs22
What
have you done with Jesus call on your life?
Have you left what you were doing to follow Him?
What
did Jesus do? vs23
What
was the result of this? Vs24
How
did people respond?
What
happened?
News
spreads; where do people come from to follow Him? vs25

What an eye opener! After Jesus wrestled with the Devil and rebuked him, minstering angels were sent to Jesus' side. They were called to minister, serve, attend, wait upon....when we've been battling the Devil in our lives how important to plug into Jesus, allowing him and His ministering angels to attend to us. This builds our strength physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Great insight, Sheryl. :)
